Frosts of -10°C and below: what you absolutely must NOT do after a beautician + SOS rescue
Why biorevitalization and frost are incompatible concepts, and what procedures can be done in winter without restrictions
Reading time: 16 minutes | Current: December 2024 – February 2025 | Expert opinion of a dermatologist
You just had biorevitalization, you leave the clinic — and it's -15°C. After a 20-minute walk home, your face is on fire, your skin is red, and spots have appeared. Does this situation sound familiar? Frost and freshly performed cosmetic procedures are incompatible things. But why? And what to do if it has already happened? A dermatologist and cosmetologist from the Ageless center in Truskavets talk about critical mistakes that 80% clients make in winter.
1. Why frost is the enemy of freshly made cosmetology
After any cosmetic procedure, the skin experiences microtrauma — from minor (after a mask) to serious (after a deep peel or injections). At this point, the skin is most vulnerable, its protective barrier is broken, blood vessels are dilated, and cells are actively regenerating.
🧊 What happens to the skin in the cold:
- Acute vascular spasm — blood circulation slows down, cells do not receive oxygen and nutrients
- Dehydration — air humidity at -10°C drops to 20-30%, skin loses water 3 times faster
- Temperature shock — a sharp drop from +22°C (in the clinic) to -15°C outside = stress for cells
- Crystallization of water — moisture in the upper layers of the skin can freeze, forming microcrystals of ice
- Regeneration disorders — in cold weather, all recovery processes slow down by 2-3 times
🔬 What science says:
Research shows that at temperatures of -10°C and below happens:
- The speed of blood circulation in the capillaries decreases by 40-60%
- Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) increases in 3-4 times
- Lipid production by the sebaceous glands decreases at 30-50%
- Cell regeneration time increases in 2-2.5 times
- The risk of frostbite of injured areas increases in 5-7 times
💡 Critical temperature limit:
-10°C is the limit after which any injured skin (after injections, peels, hardware procedures) begins to suffer critically. At -15°C and below, the risk of tissue frostbite increases exponentially, especially if the skin is already damaged by the procedure.
❄️ TEMPERATURE RISK SCALE
💬 Neborak Natalia Valeriyevna, dermatologist at the Ageless Center:
“I regularly see the consequences of winter mistakes. Clients think: 'I'll walk quickly for 15 minutes — nothing will happen.' But even 10 minutes at -15°C is enough to cause frostbite of tissues after biorevitalization or necrosis of fillers. It is especially dangerous when frost is combined with wind — the so-called 'wind chill' intensifies the damage by 2-3 times. I always say: if the thermometer shows -10°C and below, and you have just had any injection procedure — call a taxi or ask someone to pick you up. This is not reinsurance, this is a medical necessity.”
2. ❌ 7 procedures after which it is FORBIDDEN to go out into the cold
Not all procedures are equally dangerous for going out into the cold. There are risk group — procedures after which the skin is so traumatized that even short-term contact with cold can lead to serious complications.
⛔ STRICTLY FORBIDDEN in temperatures below -10°C:
1️⃣ Biorevitalization (hyaluronic acid injections)
Why is it dangerous: After the injections, dozens of papules (bubbles) with the drug remain on the face. In the cold, they can freeze, causing necrosis (death) of the surrounding tissues.
Real case: A 38-year-old client underwent biorevitalization at 4:00 PM, left at -17°C at 5:30 PM. Walked home for 25 minutes. Consequences: frostbite of cheeks, necrotic areas 5-7 mm in size, 3 weeks of treatment, scars.
How long to wait: Minimum 24 hours at -10°C, 48 hours at -15°C and below.
Particularly risky: Papular biorevitalization technique (multiple superficial papules).
2️⃣ Contour plastic with fillers (lips, nasolabial folds, cheekbones)
Why is it dangerous: Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are very sensitive to temperature changes in the first 48-72 hours. Frost can cause uneven distribution of filler, formation of seals, asymmetry.
What can happen: The filler will “settle” unevenly, the lips may become asymmetrical, painful lumps will appear, and bruises will take 2-3 times longer to heal.
How long to wait: 48-72 hours regardless of temperature. At -15°C 5-7 days is better.
Risk of necrosis: At -15°C and below there is a risk of necrosis of lip tissues (the thinnest and most sensitive area).
3️⃣ Facial mesotherapy (superficial)
Why is it dangerous: Multiple micropunctures + active substances in the surface layers of the skin. In the cold, these microtraumas do not have time to close, the cold penetrates deeper, causing inflammation.
Consequences: Severe redness, swelling that lasts 5-7 days instead of 1-2, possible hematomas.
How long to wait: 12-24 hours at -10°C, 48 hours at -15°C.
4️⃣ Chemical peels (medium and deep)
Why is it dangerous: After peeling, the skin is deprived of the protective stratum corneum. Frost directly affects the living cells of the epidermis, causing chemical-cold burn.
The most dangerous: The first 24-48 hours after the procedure, until a new stratum corneum has formed.
What will happen: Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots at the site of cold injury), prolonged redness (up to 2-3 weeks), scarring.
How long to wait: 3-7 days depending on the depth of peeling. At -15°C - up to 10-14 days.
5️⃣ Laser resurfacing (fractional thermolysis, CO2 laser)
Why is it dangerous: The laser creates thousands of microchannels in the skin (controlled burns). The frost turns them into open wounds, which cause the skin to lose moisture and become defenseless.
Critical period: 5-7 days after the procedure (while epithelialization is taking place).
How long to wait: 7-14 days regardless of the temperature. In winter, it is better not to do laser procedures at all.
6️⃣ Mechanical facial cleansing (removal of comedones)
Why is it dangerous: After cleansing, the pores are dilated, the skin is injured, and microdamages are possible. In the cold, this leads to severe irritation, inflammation, and couperose (broken capillaries).
Particularly risky: For skin prone to couperose (thin, with visible blood vessels).
How long to wait: 4-6 hours at -5°C, 12 hours at -10°C and below.
7️⃣ Microneedling (dermapen, mesoroller)
Why is it dangerous: Hundreds of micro-punctures all over the face = open gates for infection and cold. The skin bleeds, the scrotum protrudes - in the cold, all this freezes.
Consequences: Infection, prolonged inflammation, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, scarring.
How long to wait: 24-48 hours at any temperature below 0°C.
💬 Natalia Mykulchyn, cosmetologist at the Ageless center:
“In winter, I always plan procedures so that the client can get home without risk. If the forecast promises -15°C, I recommend postponing biorevitalization or fillers to another day. This is not an exaggeration - I saw a client who, after lip augmentation, walked for 10 minutes at -18°C. The result: necrosis of the red border of the lips, long treatment, psychological trauma. Now she is afraid of any injections. It is better to postpone the procedure than to risk her health and beauty.”
3. 🌡️ How many hours to wait: step-by-step table
The waiting time depends on three factors: type of procedure, outdoor temperature and individual skin characteristics. Here is a detailed cheat sheet for planning.
| Procedure | 0°C to -5°C | -5°C to -10°C | -10°C to -15°C | -15°C and below |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Biorevitalization | 4-6 hours | 12 hours | 24 hours | 48 hours |
| Fillers (lips, face) | 24 hours | 48 hours | 72 hours | 5-7 days |
| Mesotherapy | 4 hours | 8-12 hours | 24 hours | 48 hours |
| Chemical peeling (superficial) | 6-8 hours | 24 hours | 48 hours | 3-5 days |
| Chemical peel (medium/deep) | 3 days | 5 days | 7-10 days | 14 days |
| Laser grinding | 5 days | 7 days | 10 days | 14 days |
| Mechanical cleaning | 2-4 hours | 6 hours | 12 hours | 24 hours |
| Microneedling | 12 hours | 24 hours | 48 hours | 3-5 days |
⚠️ IMPORTANT to note:
- Wind — intensifies the cold by 2-3 times. With a wind speed of 10 m/s, a temperature of -10°C feels like -18°C
- Humidity — high humidity increases cooling. After rain/snow, the risk is higher
- Time outside — the table is designed for a 15-20 minute walk. If it is longer, increase the waiting time
- Individual sensitivity — thin, dry, sensitive skin needs more time
- Protection — even after waiting, be sure to use cold cream and a scarf
💡 LIFE HACK from a beautician:
If you know that you will have to go out into the cold after the procedure, arrange a taxi in advance or ask someone to pick you up. 10-15 minutes in a warm car is safe. 10-15 minutes of walking at -15°C is a risk of complications. Saving 150-200 UAH on a taxi can turn into spending 5000+ UAH on treatment of the consequences.
4. ⚠️ What happens if you go out in the cold: real consequences
Many clients think: “Well, I’ll just go through it quickly, what will happen?” The answer: a lot can happen. From temporary redness to irreversible tissue damage. We talk about the real consequences based on clinical cases.
💀 DAMAGE SCENARIOS
Scenario 1: Biorevitalization + frost -15°C
What the client did: I had biorevitalization done at 5:00 PM, left the clinic at 5:45 PM (45 minutes later!), and walked home for 20 minutes at -15°C with wind.
What I felt: The first 5 minutes — nothing special. Then — a sharp burning sensation on the cheeks. After 10 minutes — severe pain, the skin turned white.
Consequences (diagnosis):
- Frostbite of the facial skin, second degree
- Tissue necrosis in the papule areas (6 areas of 5-7 mm each)
- Aseptic inflammatory process
- Post-necrotic hyperpigmentation
Treatment: 3 weeks of anti-inflammatory therapy, 2 months of whitening procedures, small scars remained (laser resurfacing is required).
Costs: ~8000 UAH for treatment + psychological trauma + fear of injections.
Scenario 2: Lip augmentation + frost -18°C
What the client did: I had filler injected into my lips at 2:00 PM, left at 2:30 PM, waited for the bus for 10 minutes at a bus stop at -18°C.
Consequences:
- Necrosis of the red border of the upper lip (area 12x8 mm)
- Lip asymmetry due to uneven “settling” of the filler in the cold
- Long-term swelling (2 weeks instead of 2-3 days)
- Hematomas that have not disappeared for 3 weeks
Treatment: Partial dissolution of the filler with hyaluronidase, repeated correction after 3 months, treatment of necrosis.
Result: I had to do a second correction (additional costs), the lips took 2 months to heal.
Scenario 3: Chemical peel + frost -12°C
What the client did: I did a medium peel (35% TCA) at 11:00, 2 hours later I went on business at -12°C, and was outside for 40 minutes.
Consequences:
- Cold burn on top of chemical burn = double damage
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots on cheeks, chin)
- The skin was peeling off not evenly, but in “patches”
- The redness lasted 3 weeks instead of 5-7 days
Treatment: 4 months of whitening treatments (peelings, mesotherapy, home care with arbutin and retinol).
Result: Pigmentation disappeared on 70%, uneven skin tone remained.
📊 COMPLICATIONS STATISTICS (Ageless clinic data, 2020-2024):
- 85% complications in winter — associated with exposure to cold weather in the first hours after the procedure
- The most common consequences: redness (45%), edema (30%), hyperpigmentation (15%), necrosis (5%), other (5%)
- The most dangerous temperature: from -15°C to -20°C (60% all serious complications)
- The riskiest procedures: biorevitalization (40%), fillers (25%), peels (20%), others (15%)
- Average treatment time for consequences: from 2 weeks to 4 months
- Treatment costs: from 3000 to 15000 UAH
💬 Neborak Natalia Valeriyevna, dermatologist at the Ageless Center:
“The saddest thing is that most of these complications on 100% could have been avoided. Simply by waiting a few hours, calling a taxi, or moving the procedure to warmer weather. But clients often think, ‘This won’t happen to me’ or ‘I’ll just run quickly.’ The result is weeks of treatment, nerves, and money. Remember: if the thermometer shows -10°C or below, and you’ve just had a traumatic procedure, this is not reinsurance, this is a medical necessity to stay warm.”
5. ✅ What procedures CAN be done in winter without restrictions?
The good news: not all cosmetic procedures are dangerous in winter. There are winter favorites — procedures that are not only safe, but also work even better in the cold season.
❄️ WINTER PROCEDURES WITHOUT LIMITS
✅ RF-lifting (radio wave lifting)
Why is it safe: There is no disruption of the skin's integrity, no open wounds. The procedure warms the deep layers, stimulating collagen.
You can go out in the cold: After 30-60 minutes (until the redness disappears).
Why it's even better in winter: After warming the skin, the frost acts as a natural “cryolifting”, strengthening the blood vessels.
✅ Ultrasonic facial cleansing (Geneo, ultrasound)
Why is it safe: There is no mechanical damage, the pores are cleansed with ultrasound or oxygen peeling, the skin is not injured.
You can go out in the cold: Immediately after the procedure (with protective cream).
Advantages in winter: The hydration and nourishment your skin receives helps combat winter dryness.
✅ SMAS-lifting (ultrasonic lifting)
Why is it safe: Ultrasound works at the muscle level (SMAS layer) without damaging the skin surface.
You can go out in the cold: After 1-2 hours (slight redness should disappear).
Perfect for winter: Long-lasting effect (up to 1-1.5 years), no restrictions.
✅ Microcurrent therapy + alginate masks
Why is it safe: A non-invasive procedure that works through a weak current, stimulating facial muscles.
You can go out in the cold: Immediately after the procedure.
Additional plus: Relieves swelling, improves circulation - relevant for winter.
✅ Facial massage (manual, machine)
Why is it safe: There is no skin damage, only mechanical muscle stimulation and lymphatic drainage.
You can go out in the cold: Immediately.
Recommendation: A course of 5-10 procedures is ideal for preparing for spring.
✅ Laser hair removal
Why winter is the perfect time: No sunburn, you can wear long clothes (sun protection), you will have time to complete the full course by summer.
You can go out in the cold: After 2-3 hours (until the redness disappears).
Limitation: Do not apply to the face at -15°C and below (body - no restrictions).
💬 Natalia Mykulchyn, cosmetologist at the Ageless center:
“Winter is a great time for hardware cosmetology. RF-lifting, SMAS, microcurrent therapy work equally effectively all year round. And laser hair removal in winter is generally the best option, because by summer you will have time to complete the entire course and forget about unwanted hair. These procedures do not injure the skin, so you can safely go out into the cold. The only recommendation is to apply a protective cream 20-30 minutes before going out.”
6. 🆘 What to do if you have already gone out into the cold after the procedure
The worst thing happened — you went out into the cold right after a traumatic procedure. What to do NOW to minimize the consequences? Step-by-step SOS instructions from a dermatologist.
🆘 SOS INSTRUCTIONS: FIRST ACTIONS
STEP 1: Reduce your exposure to cold (IMMEDIATELY!)
- 🚕 Call a taxi or ask someone to pick you up (even if it's a 5 minute walk!)
- 🏢 Go into the nearest building. (shop, cafe, entrance) — warm up for at least 10-15 minutes
- 🧣 Cover your face with a scarf (NOT tight! So as not to put pressure on the papules)
- ❌ DO NOT rub your face! — this will increase the damage
STEP 2: At home - immediate measures (first 30 minutes)
- 🌡️ Gradual warming — NOT hot water! First, cool room temperature (+18-20°C), after 10 minutes — warm (+25-27°C)
- 💧 Apply thermal water or micellar water (WITHOUT alcohol!) - wet your face, blot with a tissue
- 🧴 Soothing cream with panthenol (Bepanthen, Pantoderm) - a thin layer on the affected areas
- ❄️ DO NOT apply ice! — this will increase cold damage
- ❌ Don't wash yourself! — the first 2-3 hours after arrival
STEP 3: The first 24 hours — intensive care
- 💊 Antihistamines (Cetrin, Suprastin) — reduce swelling and inflammation
- 🧴 Soothing masks — alginate, with aloe, centella (2-3 times a day)
- 💧 Drink more water. — 2-2.5 liters per day
- 🌿 Chamomile/calendula compresses — cool (NOT cold!), for 10 minutes 3-4 times a day
- ❌ DO NOT use: alcohol tonics, acids, retinols, scrubs
⚠️ WHEN YOU NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR URGENTLY:
- 🔴 Skin whitening or gray-blue color (sign of necrosis)
- 🔴 Blistering with clear or bloody fluid
- 🔴 Severe swelling, which does not decrease after 4-6 hours
- 🔴 Pain that gets worse (does not decrease after 2-3 hours)
- 🔴 Body temperature above 37.5°C
- 🔴 Sealing in the areas of fillers/papules (may be a sign of necrosis)
☎️ In these cases, immediately contact the dermatologist or cosmetologist who performed the procedure!
📋 HOME FIRST AID KIT “SOS AFTER FROST”:
What to always have at home if you do cosmetic procedures in winter:
- ✅ Thermal water (Avene, La Roche-Posay, Vichy)
- ✅ Cream with panthenol (Bepanten, Pantoderm, Depantol)
- ✅ Soothing mask (alginate, with centella, aloe)
- ✅ Antihistamine tablets (Cetrin, Suprastin)
- ✅ Hydrogel eye patches (to relieve swelling)
- ✅ Chamomile/calendula for compresses
💬 Neborak Natalia Valeriyevna, dermatologist at the Ageless Center:
“If you go out into the cold immediately after the procedure and feel discomfort, don't panic, but don't ignore the symptoms either. In most cases, proper home care in the first 24-48 hours can prevent serious consequences. But if alarming signals appear (whitening of the skin, blisters, severe swelling) - don't wait 'maybe it will pass'. See a doctor immediately. The sooner we start treatment, the less the consequences.”
7. 📅 How to properly plan cosmetology in winter
To avoid complications, winter beauty treatments should be planned with the weather, logistics, and your own schedule in mind. Here's a step-by-step strategy for safe winter beauty treatments.
📋 STEP-BY-STEP PLANNING STRATEGY
Step 1: Check the weather forecast for the week ahead
Before booking a procedure, check the forecast. If the forecast says -15°C or below, it is better to postpone biorevitalization or fillers to warmer weather.
- 📱 Use reliable forecasts (Gismeteo, Sinoptik, Meteoblue)
- 🌡️ See not only the temperature, but also the wind (wind chill)
- 📅 Plan procedures on days with thaw or moderate frosts (-5°C max)
Step 2: Choose the optimal time for the procedure
Best time: Morning or afternoon, so that at least 4-6 hours pass by evening (when the frosts intensify).
✅ PERFECT: Procedure at 10:00-12:00 → go home immediately (taxi) → 6-8 hours have passed by evening → you can go to the store.
⚠️ RISK: Procedure at 5:00 PM → leave at 6:00 PM → frost has intensified to -15°C → long way home.
Step 3: Think about logistics to/from the clinic
- 🚕 Taxi is the safest option (150-200 UAH costs less than treatment of complications)
- 🚗 Ask someone to pick you up. — husband, relatives, friends
- 🏢 If you are walking: maximum 5-7 minutes of walking, face covered with a scarf
- ❌ Avoid: long waits for transport, minibuses during rush hour
Step 4: Prepare your defense in advance
30-60 minutes before leaving home (for the procedure):
- 🧴 Apply protective cold cream (Cold Cream from Uriage, Avene, Bioderma)
- ☀️ Top — SPF 30-50 (winter sun is also harmful!)
- 👄 Hygienic lipstick for lips (quality balm)
After the procedure (before leaving):
- 🧣 Soft scarf (not synthetic!) — cover your face, but DO NOT press
- 👒 Hood or hat — wind protection
- ❌ Do not apply makeup immediately after the procedure!
📱 CHECKLIST: WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU TO THE PICK-UP PROCEDURE
✅ Required:
- 🧣 Soft scarf (large)
- 👒 Hood/hat
- 💧 Thermal water (mini bottle)
- 💰 Money for a taxi (200-300 UAH)
✨ Preferably:
- 🧴 Soothing cream (Panthenol)
- 😎 Sunglasses (for wind protection)
- 🧊 Hydrogel patches (if swelling)
- 📱 Taxi number in speed dial
💬 Natalia Mykulchyn, cosmetologist at the Ageless center:
“In our clinic, we always warn clients about the weather forecast. If we see that severe frosts are expected, we suggest postponing the procedure to warmer weather or scheduling it so that the client can get home safely. We also recommend calling a taxi directly from the clinic — it is better to spend 200 UAH than to risk your health. Your safety is our number one priority.”
8. ❓ 10 most popular questions about frost and cosmetology
1. Is it possible to do biorevitalization in winter?
Yes, you can, but with caution. Biorevitalization in winter is one of the most popular procedures, because the cold reduces swelling. The main rule: do not go out into the cold for at least 24 hours after the procedure. If the temperature is below -10°C, it is better to wait 48 hours. Plan the procedure for the weekend when you can stay home.
2. What happens if the temperature drops to -20°C after filler injections?
The risk of tissue necrosis is up to 30%! At -20°C, the filler can freeze at the injection site, causing the surrounding tissue to die. Lips are particularly vulnerable—necrosis of the red border can leave permanent scars. Asymmetry is also possible due to uneven “settling” of the filler in the cold. Absolutely not recommended! If you can't stay home, postpone the procedure to warmer weather.
3. How many hours after mechanical cleaning can you go out in -10°C frost?
At least 12 hours later. Mechanical cleaning injures the skin - the pores are dilated, microdamages are possible. At -10°C, it is recommended to wait 12 hours for the pores to close and the skin to calm down. If the frost intensifies to -15°C - it is better to wait 24 hours. Plan cleaning in the evening so that the skin can recover the next day.
4. Can I do RF lifting in the cold and go outside right away?
Yes, RF lifting is safe in winter! The procedure does not violate the integrity of the skin, so you can go out into the cold after 30-60 minutes (until the redness disappears). Moreover, after warming up the skin, the cold acts as a natural “cryolifting”, strengthening the blood vessels. The only recommendation is to apply a protective cream before going out.
5. What are the first signs that the skin is suffering from frostbite after the procedure?
Alarm signals:
- 🔴 Sharp burning sensation, pain (not just discomfort!)
- 🔴 Skin whitening or gray-blue color
- 🔴 Loss of sensitivity in certain areas
- 🔴 Severe redness that does not disappear after 1-2 hours
- 🔴 Swelling that increases instead of decreasing
If you experience any of these symptoms, immediately go into a warm room and consult a doctor.
6. Is there a difference between -10°C in windy and calm weather?
Huge difference! Wind intensifies the cold by 2-3 times. With a wind speed of 10 m/s, a temperature of -10°C feels like -18-20°C (so-called “wind chill”). Therefore, if the forecast promises frost + wind, this is a double risk. Take this into account when planning procedures. In windy weather, increase the waiting time by 1.5-2 times.
7. Can I protect my face with foundation or powder after the procedure?
NO, absolutely not! After traumatic procedures (injections, peels, cleanings), decorative cosmetics can:
- ❌ Clog pores (especially after cleansing)
- ❌ Cause inflammation
- ❌ Infect puncture sites
- ❌ Increase irritation
Use only: protective cold cream + SPF + soft scarf. Cosmetics can be applied 24 hours after the procedure.
8. If I live far from the clinic (40 minutes away), can I have injection procedures done in the winter?
It is possible, but with proper planning:
- 🚕 Call a taxi from the clinic (don't save on your health!)
- 🚗 Drive your own car (with heated interior)
- 🏨 Stay overnight with relatives/friends in the city
- ⏰ Do the procedures on Friday to spend the weekend in warmth
Not recommended: 40 minutes in a minibus or waiting for transport in the cold. These are guaranteed complications.
9. Will cold cream help protect the skin immediately after biorevitalization?
Cold cream will help, but it will NOT save you completely. The protective cream creates a barrier against cold, but it cannot prevent the drug from freezing in the papules or tissue necrosis in extreme cold (-15°C and below). Cold cream reduces the risk by 30-40%, but does NOT eliminate it completely. Therefore, the main protection is to avoid exposure to the cold in the first hours after the procedure.
10. How much does it cost to treat the effects of exposure to the cold after the procedure?
Depends on the severity of the complications:
- 💰 Mild consequences (redness, swelling) — 500-1500 UAH (soothing procedures, masks)
- 💰 Medium consequences (hyperpigmentation) — 3000-5000 UAH (2-3 months of whitening procedures)
- 💰 Severe consequences (necrosis, scars) — 8000-15000 UAH (long-term treatment, possible laser correction)
Conclusion: A taxi for 200 UAH or postponing the procedure costs 15-75 times less than treating the consequences. Don't skimp on safety!
